Description
Let students have fun with chemistry by performing this 5-station Science Halloween or Wizard themed Potions Chemistry lab activity that is super fun for an October or Halloween-themed science lab, perfect if you teach middle school science! Each student receives a “Spells and Potions” booklet where he or she will follow directions for each station, record observations, and write about the science happening in each activity. The concepts cover density, pH, chemical reactions, miscibility, and catalysts...but your students don't need to know the vocabulary behind these concepts...they just need to be able to make observations and attempt to explain what they see!
Set the mood! String up Halloween-colored lights and play some eerie music softly in the background while your mad scientists are casting their spells! I have included 'apothecary bottle' labels, so you can find neat/random bottles and label them appropriately (the 'ingredients' for the potions have wizard-ish names like 'Dried Spider Legs', 'Werewolf Saliva', 'Toad Slime', etc.)
Detailed teacher notes are included...they outline all of the materials that you will need (everything can be purchased from the grocery or dollar store, with the exception of some glassware like small beakers, graduated cylinders, and test tubes), what to set up at each station, and scientific explanations for what happens in each mini-lab.
You can facilitate this activity as stations OR as a one-or two-lab per day activity that spans an entire week! I have included two options for the student packet: one option is a “Spells and Potions” booklet and the other option is full-page printables that you can print as mini packets (one for each station or do this as one lab per day).
There is an editable version of the student booklet included in this download and also Google Slides Lab Slides that you can project in your classroom that include safety tips for your students and some explanations to use during discussion after performing the labs.
I have also included five fun activities (word search, crossword puzzle, and drawing activities) that can be used for early finishers or as additional stations if you need to spread out students more.
This download includes:
- Detailed teacher notes with science explanations
- Supply list with quantities (Please also see the PREVIEW for the full supply list)
- 'Apothecary bottle' labels
- Station signs
- Student sheets in booklet option
- Student sheets in full-page option
- Google Slides lab slides with science explanations
- 80+ Wizard Names on name tags

Please note: your students will need to know how to measure liquids with graduated cylinders... check out my Graduated Cylinder Liquid Volume Color Magic Lab to teach this laboratory skill!
