What educators are saying

I love the science chat lab series from Amy Brown! They work as a great introduction to science (and as an introduction of my students to each other and me to their work in collaborative groups)! I highly recommend these!
This resource is so professionally created and so useful. It challenged my students and they enjoyed it!

Description

These 17 laboratory stations will ensure that your students have mastered the essential skills they need to be successful in any science class. Students will work together to solve a problem, complete a task, and /or carry out a small experiment at each of the 17 stations. This chat activity covers the VERY important topic of “Science Skills.” There are so many skills that we use on a daily basis in our science classes. These skills include the use of metric measurements, the use of basic pieces of lab equipment, scientific notation, dimensional analysis, tabling and graphing data, the scientific method, and so many more. See complete list of lab stations below.

The completion of these lab stations will help your students be ready when a particular skill is needed later in the school year.

I use the word “chat” to emphasize to my students that they are to work together and have a productive discussion at each lab station in order to maximize their understanding and mastery of the concepts being covered.

What is included in this resource?

  • 17 Sets of Student Handouts (One set of worksheets per station – 30 total student pages)
  • 17 Science Skills Chat Lab Station Instruction Cards
  • 12-Page Teacher Guide
  • 30-Page Teacher Answer Key
  • 8 Additional Lab Station Diagrams

What is the purpose of this activity?

My “Chat” activities involve lab stations and cooperative student groups. This type of student interaction is a powerful teaching tool. The relaxed atmosphere of a small group setting often leads to increased mastery of the subject matter content.

The lab stations are independent of each other. Do just a few lab stations or do them all! Stations not requiring lab equipment can be completed with a sub, or as a homework assignment.

Teaching Tips!

  • I would suggest picking 4 or 5 skills (lab stations) that are most needed for your students and completing those stations first. As your students require additional skills during the year, complete the lab stations needed at that time.
  • How about starting the school year by having “Science Skills Friday”? Each week, use a collection of these lab stations to have a weekly science skills review and reinforcement day. Have students put the completed lab handouts in a notebook to refer to throughout the year.

All materials are completely editable.

Check out the preview for a detailed description of each lab station and a complete materials list.

What are the benefits of this activity?

  • Group work is an important part of what we do in a science class, and it is a skill that will be needed throughout life. Lab station activities teach students how to work together to achieve a goal.
  • Lab Stations break down the information into smaller and more manageable units. This prevents students from becoming overwhelmed when faced with massive amounts of information.
  • These lab stations will ensure that your students have mastered the basic skills that are used in a science class all year long.
  • Lab stations are a great review tool for the unit test.
  • "Students helping students" is a powerful teaching tool.

What will the students be doing?

There are 17 lab stations. Students will rotate through the stations, completing the tasks at each station. Each station will highlight an essential science skill. Tasks will be completed by the group as well as a worksheet of analysis questions. There are 30 pages of student worksheets.

Need to save paper? No problem! Place one copy of the student worksheet at each lab station and have students complete the work on their own notebook paper.

What Science Skills Lab Stations are Included?

Please note that some of the lab stations must be completed in a lab setting and some of the stations can be completed in the classroom or given as a homework assignment. Stations marked with an “*” require lab equipment.
