Make sure your students never forget lab rules about eye safety and goggles! Back to school science doesn't have to be boring, and science lab safety procedures have never been so fun. Perfect activity and demo for the first day of school in upper elementary, middle school and high school. I use this with my 5th and 6th graders, but it would definitely work for older students. Your students will LOVE this.

Objective: Students will investigate substances and test the effect of chemicals on the human eye using an egg white.
*I've had some questions about the hydrogen peroxide. You can buy lab grade here.
**I have continued to have questions and comments about the hydrogen peroxide. Drugstore hydrogen peroxide is not as effective because it is diluted to a low concentration. You will have to use a generous amount to get the "cooking effect", which would appear as foamy and stringy, web like solidified area of egg. It also only has a shelf-life of three years, so check your expiration date please.
You CAN use alcohol as a substitute with more dramatic (though less bubbly) effects, however, the students will be able to smell the difference between the water and the alcohol as they try to identify the difference in the two *mystery* liquids... and part of the point is to make them aware of how liquids may have very similar physical properties, but vastly different chemical properties so they must always follow safety procedures.
Modifying it to test *all three* substances might give you the best of both worlds, since none of the students will choose the alcohol and you can test it for them and get the *wow* factor of the instant scramble.
