Description

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are a game-changer for science at the elementary level. They are performance standards – the students must “do science” in order to show attainment. Because they need to be worked into the very busy day in an elementary classroom, it is imperative the science standards be integrated with reading and writing workshops and not treated as a separate subject. The Science Clubhouse Workshop series does just that.

Science Clubhouse Workshop has carefully sequenced NGSS performance standards to match the reading and writing progression throughout a curricular year at a particular grade level. Performance standards that lend themselves to less sophisticated reading and writing skills are done early in the year. As the year progresses, NGSS lessons are planned that require higher level skills for reading and writing. Thus, it is suggested the lessons be done in order over the course of a school year.

The science standards have been revised to include engineering from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Inquiry, therefore, has been replaced by Science and Engineering Practices which are woven throughout all the science disciplines. Crosscutting Concepts link all domains of science (physical, life, earth/space). They include: patterns, (similarity, and diversity); cause and effect; scale (proportion and quantity); systems and system models; energy and matter; structure and function; stability and change.

The Disciplinary Core Ideas have broad importance and are key organizing science concepts. They connect to interests, life experiences, and social concerns that require scientific or technological knowledge. DCIs are grouped into four domains: the physical sciences, the life sciences, the earth/space sciences, and engineering, technology, and applications of science. More information is available at http://www.nextgenscience.org/.

This workshop volume is for the second grade. It includes all 14 NGSS performance standards for that grade level. There are 10 lessons; three lessons cover both a science domain and an engineering domain at the same time. In order to meet all the science standards, a student must do the science investigation part. Just reading or writing about science will not meet the performance criteria of the Next Generation Science Standards.
