Description

This document was used with my newcomer English learners to help them when they needed to visit the school nurse and to acquaint them with the school staff who might be doing routine hearing/vision screenings with students in their grade/class. I've laminated the pictures and used them in various ways: as flashcards, cut up and used as a "pass" to the nurse with the appropriate complaint/symptom identified (since they weren't able to tell her in English), as an assessment, and for vocabulary study. You may find other ways that are suitable for your students. I've also taken the picture of the school nurse and the office where she was located to use with these pictures, which has been helpful as well.

There are sixteen colored pictures with labels of routine school nurse vocabulary in English and translated into Spanish. My English learners came from different Spanish-speaking countries--El Salvador, Colombia, Guatemala, and Mexico so deciding upon the 'correct' term for each picture was not always something they agreed upon; you may find other terminology that fits the L1 of your students as well. These pictures are not specific to any grade level, but I've found them beneficial for English Learners pk-12.
