Description

PURPOSE:

Use this activity to guide your students through understanding how ratios may be used in real life. Your students will be required to measure an image length and width with accuracy. Then they will use scale factors and ratios to create a grid on that image and scale the image up to 5 times the size.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

This product contains:

✏️ 3 pages of instructions for students to read and use

✏️ Printable Candy Bar Wrappers to Scale

✏️ Samples of Student Work

✏️ An assignable Easel activity

STORY:

I had seen that someone had this idea before – this is certainly not an original. So it is free to you but I went ahead and wrote out step-by-step how to do it. This activity took my students anywhere from 3-5 hours to complete. I would recommend this version of the activity for work with ratios and proportional reasoning commonly taught in 6th and 7th grades.

POSSIBLE EXTENSIONS:

If you are more interested in completing this activity using fractions, check out my alternate version of this activity: Scale Up a Candy Bar with Fractions | Math Exploration

MATERIALS/PRE-REQS:

Besides this file, you may require:

✏️ Butcher Paper or Poster Board

✏️ Colored Pencils, Crayons or Markers

Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, “The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.” “For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes.”
