The Chinese Lunar New Year takes place on February 10th in 2024! It's the year of the Dragon!
This is a story about a boy who learns to be grateful by giving to others who are experiencing homelessness and may be less fortunate.
Who: For Speech-Language Pathologists working with mixed groups of 3rd – 5th grade level students and targeting pragmatics, language and articulation goals:

→Included are 9 narrative-based speech intervention activities and worksheets to be used with Sam and the Lucky Money by Karen Chinn.
→This product is designed to be used as a companion to the book, not as a stand-alone product.
When: During the Chinese New Year (Jan. 22, 2023) and units on Chinese culture.
Where & How: Use in individual or small group speech sessions. Can be used across 6-7 thirty-minute sessions, not including the book reading time.
ACTIVITIES INCLUDED
Activity 1: Vocabulary Memory (BONUS black & white version)
A fun way to pre-teach or review vocabulary. Divide picture cards and definition cards and place face-down on table. Students take turns picking word cards and definition cards. If they find a match, that student keeps the card and takes another turn.
Activity 2: 100 Punches Describing
Your students will not stop describing! Describe each item from the story using the question prompts provided. Students punch a hole for each accurate detail. Punch a hole in the corner and secure with a paperclip for home practice.
Activity 3: 100 Punches Articulation R, L, TH, SH, S, and Z
Many of my 3rd – 5th grade students are working on later developing sounds so why not target words from the story? Highlight the word, sentence or prompt based on the student’s goal. Students punch a hole for each accurate production and work on self-discrimination. Punch a hole in the corner and secure with a paperclip for home practice.
Activity 4: Synonyms and Antonyms Worksheet (NO PREP)
Find and write the correct synonym and antonym of words from the story in the columns provided. Answer key provided.
Activity 5: Multiple Meaning Words Worksheet (NO PREP)
Find and write the correct meanings of multiple meaning words from the story in the columns provided. Answer key provided.
Activity 6: Expected vs. Unexpected Worksheet (NO PREP)
Target pragmatics! Read each choice made by characters from the story and decide if the choice is expected or unexpected in your community. Explain your answer in the space provided. Sample answers provided.
Activity 7: Literal and Nonliteral Meaning Worksheet (NO PREP)
Target figurative language! Read each simile, metaphor, idiom, etc. used in the story and choose the literal and nonliteral meaning from the answer choices provided.
Activity 8: Lucky Money Conjunction Activity
Ask students to think about how Sam spent his 4 dollars. Discuss how each student would spend their money if they had four dollars. Then, help students complete the sentences on the lines provided. Place the lucky money into the red envelopes to complete the activity.
Activity 9: Fortune Cookie Conjunction Activity
Ask students to think about why Sam felt lucky at the end of the story. Ask students to discuss how they are lucky. Then, help them write a fortune to themselves on the lines provided. Place the fortune strip into the fortune cookie to complete the activity.
