Description
This is a pair pack of resources for covering the Salem Witch Trials: A documentary viewing guide and a vocabulary word search puzzle. Great for including with any study of these events in early American history, with literature such as The Crucible, or as a seasonal activity during the Halloween season.
1. Salem Witch Trials Documentary Viewing Guide - This is our resource for viewing the Smithsonian Channel's documentary on the Salem Witch Trials. At the time of this product's posting (2022), it is free to watch on their YouTube channel. The documentary episode is 50 minutes in length and is available for free on Smithsonian Channel's YouTube account (entitled, "America’s Hidden Stories: Salem’s Secrets," link also included in our overview). Students will complete viewing guide questions and discussion questions. The viewing guide questions are detailed, but we've made sure to space them out enough so that it's not too fast for writing down answers. The discussion questions prompt students to reflect on the content they learned in the film and can be done either independently or in small groups. At the end, you can have the whole class share out.
2. Salem Witch Trials Word Search Puzzle - This is a word search puzzle with vocabulary terms about the Salem Witch Trials. This worksheet can be assigned for a variety of uses: Independent work, practicing teamwork, having a class competition, filling in extra class time, a quick sub plan, etc. There are also pictures included on the puzzle sheet that students can color. An answer key is provided for both grading and guiding students if they need help. No prep required; print and go!
Please note that the subject of the Salem Witch Trials inherently involves some frightening, gruesome, and mature topics. Some content in the documentary, such as mature images from ancient art, reenactments of hangings, girls screaming, etc. may not be appropriate for all audiences.
