What educators are saying

This was a great review resource at the end of our fractions unit. Most of my students enjoyed creating their shamrock at the end.
Super cute and fun way to celebrate the holiday with an activity aligned to the content and a great visual display!

Description

Students solve fraction math problems involving mixed numbers and improper fractions on each of 4 paper shamrocks. Then, they color and decorate the clovers, cut them out, and construct a 3D hanging shamrock craft. Hole punch and add some string to hang the shamrocks for a festive hallway displays or classroom decor for the month of March. Perfect for St. Patrick's day!

Fraction skills included:

  • changing mixed numbers to improper fractions
  • changing improper fractions to mixed numbers
  • comparing and ordering mixed numbers and improper fractions
  • adding and subtracting mixed numbers and improper fractions with like denominators (with and without regrouping).

This download includes:

  • Teacher directions
  • Student directions with photos of each step (color and black and white versions)
  • 4 pre-filled fraction shamrocks
  • 1 blank shamrock that you can customize with your own fraction problems
  • an answer key

Explain why a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 × 𝘢)/(𝘯 × 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
