This is a high resolution, instant digital download of my artwork created with the intention of use for therapy – SUD and VOC scale combo - flip chart - Subjective Units of Distress and Validity - digital download.

This item is a combination of the VOC & SUD scales onto one sheet of paper that can be folded in half (longways) at the line in the middle so that you can have a more compact version of the scales.

The Subjective Unit of Distress Scale (SUDS) is used as a way to measure a person’s level of disturbance in many different therapy modalities. I created it with the intention of use being for EMDR Therapy.

It ranges from 10 to 0, where 10 is the highest level of stress or disturbance possible and 0 is no disturbance or distress.

The Validity of Cognition Scale is a therapy tool used in EMDR Therapy (among other modalities) to measure how true a cognition, idea, or concept is to a person. In EMDR therapy this would be used to assess how true an adaptive (positive) belief feels as it relates to a certain memory the is to be processed.

The scale ranges from 1 to 7, where 1 is completely false and 7 is completely true. Ideally, at the end of EMDR Treatment, a client’s VOC for their positive belief would be 7.

For the purposes of EMDR Therapy, there is more than one scale being used in the process. Since this can lead to some confusion in my experience, I created this tool. The purpose of this tool is to help illustrate the SUD, or Subjective Units of Distress Scale, to ,ale the concept easier to visualize and understand.

Why I do it

Like so many, I couldn’t find the tools that I was looking for that weren’t old and busted, photocopied so many times you couldn’t make them out, or just plain not in a style that suited my brand and my practice. So, I set out to create psycho-educational materials for modern therapists who want to communicate better with their clients.

My mission is to create engaging, mental health related artwork that can either be used as visual psycho-education aides by therapists, counselors and coaches, or as inspirational reminders of your own healing journey.

Printing Recommendations

This digital item can be printed on virtually any size paper, however the image quality may degrade a bit, if the paper size is greater than 15” x 11”. Ultimately, the quality of the print is determined by the size of the ‘canvas’ as well as the paper material that you choose. For best results, I highly recommend printing these images using high-quality paper, like photo paper or card stock. You can print at home, of course, or there are other online printing options listed below.
