Description

STEM lesson about Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery.

Students learn lessons for today and skills for tomorrow as they collaborate to solve historical problems! In this Mind Missions lesson, students will learn about Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their journey to explore the West. Then, they will collaborate to solve a problem that faced the great explorers on their adventure.

This lesson is part of our American Pioneers series.

Mind Missions are team-based, creative problem solving activities that engage students in solving historical challenges using their minds and common household materials. After reading a short story that informs students of the historical setting, students team up and work together to devise a solution to the mission. Mind Missions vary as widely as historical problems. Students may work together to construct an engineering marvel or collaborate to create a convincing commercial.

Mind Missions offer teachers a way to engage students in standards-based social studies curriculum while teaching critical 21st century skills.

• Students use collaboration and creativity to understand and solve problems related to historical subjects.
• Critical thinking and problem solving skills are embedded in each lesson. Students learn to address complex problems without simple solutions.
• Students build connections between the challenges of the past and life today. History becomes relevant and real!

And it’s fun! Students love Mind Missions and teachers love watching their students grow as they learn content and skills.
