STEM Lab - Magnet Races

This STEM Lab - Magnet Races- was designed as an introductory engineering design lab where students use the 5E method (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate) to discover how magnets work, repel versus attract, the magnetic field, and if magnets need to touch other magnets to make them move. STEM integrates science, technology, engineering, and math to design products to solve a problem. Students need internet access to watch several videos and to read introductory information about magnets. I like to play MC Hammer's, "Can't Touch This," song while we are starting. I did this with lower 5th graders who LOVED this.

There are two options to do this STEM Lab: whole class or stations. For the whole class simpler STEM Lab, you can guide the whole class step by step but have each table do the lab. Print out the CAN’T TOUCH THIS lab sheet for each student to glue in their interactive science notebook (ISN). A more detailed, lengthened discovery STEM Lab uses 5 stations that follow the 5E method. Print out the lab station forms per student and let them discover more independently. Review as a class after everyone is finished.
