Looking for a hands-on electromagnetism lab?! Build a simple motor in this electromagnetism STEM Challenge! Students will be challenged at first, but later FLOORED once they get it to work. Lots of "AH HA!" moments with this one!
This 60-90 minute STEM Challenge is GREAT for teaching persistence. I've NEVER had an 8th grader unable to achieve success with this activity, but it definitely takes time!
►There are 3 pages of step by step student directions, with pictures. I recommend printing and laminating for years of use (pictures are in color).
►An explanation is also given to students on how a motor works (upper middle school to high school appropriate).
►A student lab sheet is included.
►Grading rubric and teacher recommendations also included.
⇨Needed for lab: d-cells, copper wiring with plastic coating, disc magnets, electrical tape, large paper clips, play-dough, and scissors. Also recommended: patience and persistence. :) Enjoy!
