Description

Maker Challenge Cards for STEAM and Language Development

These cards include 6 challenges that can be done with a variety of simple materials, individually, in pairs, or in small groups. They can be used in many different ways, such as:

A warm-up to begin class

Group collaboration projects

Independent learning at a mini maker station during free choice time

Activities to introduce or expand on target language or topics

A hands-on experience that helps students make real-world connections

Each challenge has an optional extension card, which can be attached as a reverse side, or saved for later. These extensions offer three prompts to pick and choose from, promoting critical thinking, design skills, and oracy. They can also easily connect to or enhance lessons in other areas, such as ELA*, Social Studies, Science*, Art, and Math*.

Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.
Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.
Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
