Description

Happy New Year! Help students celebrate the tradition of setting a New Year's Resolution with this fun and inspiring unit on goal setting! Students will learn learn about the science behind setting and reaching their goals, practice writing and identifying goals that meet the SMART criteria, and set their own SMART goal for the New Year by answering a series of simple, student-friendly questions.

Activities and Materials Include:

  • Reading and Response: Students will study the science of setting goals and practice using key features of informational texts -- like bold words and tables -- to answer questions that address comprehension, author's intent, and more!
  • Student-Friendly SMART Goals: Students will learn the "SMART" criteria for goals-- modified to be clearer for young learners! They will set their own SMART goal for the New Year by answering a series of child-friendly questions... like thinking about their goal like a video game! Over 60+ SMART goals in 6 categories that address the needs and growth of the whole child, like "Math," "Health," and "Bucket-Filling," for students who need inspiration!
  • SMART Goal Certificate: Celebrate and recognize student's success with a beautiful, printable certificate they can fill out and hang in the classroom. Modifiable to be used year after year!
  • Whole Class and Small Group Activities: Almost 40 pages of material, with suggestions for use. Students will have fun running and racing in a SMART goal sorting game and work together to edit and revise New Years Resolutions to make them SMART-er!
  • Printable Posters with engaging graphics to scaffold ELs and other learners
