Description
Mastering the rules for capitalization can be tricky for students. After struggling to teach capitalization in way that students understood and could apply to their own writing naturally and effortlessly, I created this resource to teach the rules to capitalization in a way that was easy and fun through editing sentences. Students get one rule at a time and master it before adding on a new one.
Each page introduces one new capitalization rule and reviews those previously taught and practiced. The rule numbers are listed at the top of each page for easy reference because students should not only mark the capital letter, but should also know WHY that word needed to be capitalized, writing the rule number above it.
This resources comes with:
- All 10 capitalization rules and examples on one page that can be used as a classroom poster or simply printed for the students' reference.
- 8 instructional pages where the rules are introduced just one at a time (except for the first page which introduces the first 3) with examples so the students can master them before adding more to the mix. Practice sentences are at the bottom of each page.
- 7 pages of cumulative review to be used after the capitalization rules numbers have been mastered and taught.
- 2 DIY Sentences pages where students write their own sentences given the rule numbers to be included.
- 2 "Be the Teacher" pages where students can use a colored pencil (or pen!) to check and correct and already "completed" page with some errors.
- Answer key for all pages included
- Teacher tips to help you make the most of this resource in your classroom
This activity works best in small group instruction and is also perfect for morning work or independent/group station work.
