Rounding, Comparing, Ordering and Place Value Review

This Common Core activity can be used as a webquest with iPads/laptops/computers OR the charts from the website can be printed if teachers don't have access. Students are to follow the directions given, locate a chart on the website that compares heights of trees and later on, one that compares the largest lakes in the United States. Students will have to use the data to round numbers (the highest the rounding goes is to the ten thousands), compare numbers, order from least to greatest and greatest to least, and write numbers in word and expanded forms. A little bit of geography is also incorporated into the activity as students are asked about mountain ranges and lakes found in the United States (which can all be found in the charts). At the end, kids are asked to create their own question based off of the chart.

This activity requires children to pay close attention to reading directions. I allowed my students to work in pairs, but this can also be an independent, group, or teacher lead activity. I went over a few questions before they started, so I could model how to closely read the questions and directions.
