Description

This cultural handout and worksheet details what the Romans ate, describes how they dined, and invites students to compare ancient Roman foods and customs to the modern world. This handout, part of the food unit, is perfect around Thanksgiving in your Latin class.

The back of the handout has comprehension and reflection questions based on what the students just learned from the descriptions on the front. After the "quaestiones" section, there are two activities: a grocery list and a menu creation task.

  • Given a list of food (in both Latin and English, so this serves as a vocabulary list for the unit), students will cross off the items that Romans did not eat. They can use the front of the handout to find this information.
  • Using what remains of the grocery list, students will create a menu for a Roman dinner party, including a gustatio, prima mensa, and secunda mensa dish.

The handout comes with a black-and-white version for ease of printing. If you plan to use this as part of a Thanksgiving unit, there is also a Thanksgiving color palette version as well.

In the "teacher notes" section of the PDF, you'll find suggested discussion prompts to further engage your students and build community within your classroom!
