What educators are saying

This was such a fun activity! My class had a great time and wanted to go back and play it again! It was a great supplement to our textbook and in class learning!
These games have become my 'go to' to launch a unit. Students love pretending what they would do if they could make choices about forming ancient societies.

Description

This no-prep, game-based Roman Empire Archaeological Simulation will be a highlight in your Ancient Rome unit! In this Roman Empire activity with printable and digital options, students will take on the role of archaeologists to look for artifacts in different locations from throughout the Roman Empire.

Simulations can be such fun and meaningful activities, but they often take a lot of work and preparation to set up, which is why we did all of the work for you! You don't need to cut, purchase, or set-up anything to do this simulation, simply present the slideshow to your students and copy or share the corresponding handout with them.

This simulation features eight different rounds of competition. In each round, students must make a decision about a certain topic or roll the dice to see what they might experience as an archaeologist who is investigating artifacts from the Roman Empire. Students will also answer related trivia questions about the Roman Empire! The eight rounds are:

  • Which tools will you use?
  • Where will you dig for artifacts?
  • What will you find in Roman Egypt?
  • What will you find in Gaul?
  • What will you find in Roman Britain?
  • What will you find in the ruins of Pompeii?
  • What will you find in the city of Rome?
  • What will you find in Constantinople?

The slides that facilitate the simulation are organized and take students step-by-step through the entire process. Throughout the simulation, students will calculate how many points they have earned. Finally, the slideshow ends with some optional discussion questions you can use at the end of the simulation.

This epic Ancient Rome Simulation includes the following components:

  • Teacher Guide (PDF)
  • Roman Empire Simulation Slideshow (Editable Google Slideshow with 44 slides)
  • Roman Empire Simulation Journal (Student handouts available for printable PDF and editable Google Doc)
