What educators are saying

My kids enjoyed this lab. I do think it helped them to understand the process a bit better. I would say the biggest hitch was making the foil "boat" for the melting part. Other than that, it was good.
I loved this project for the Friday before Christmas break! It was fun, easy to model and was a great illustration of the rock cycle.

Description

The goal of this lesson is for students to discover how rocks change from one form to another in a process called the rock cycle. To understand this important standard, students will create their own model of the rock cycle using Starburst candy. They will then write a scientific argument that explains the rock cycle using the CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) method. This activity is a fun and engaging way to meet a very important NGSS/Common Core Standard. Please note the following items will be needed: Starburst candies, candles (or microwave), scissors, forceps (or crucible tongs) and aluminum foil.

Included:

★ A three-page handout that guides students through the process of transforming starburst rocks into sediment, sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock, and igneous rock (EDITABLE WORD DOC ALSO INCLUDED)

★ A completed rock cycle diagram and a full example CER argument

★ Teacher tips and suggestions

NGSSMS-ESS2-1
Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the flow of energy that drives this process. Emphasis is on the processes of melting, crystallization, weathering, deformation, and sedimentation, which act together to form minerals and rocks through the cycling of Earth’s materials. Assessment does not include the identification and naming of minerals.
