Description
This rich word problem with a worked solution addresses many common core standards in the domain of Ratios and Proportional Relationships. This seemingly complex problem becomes very accessible to middle school students when it is modeled with a tape diagram. A great kickoff to any ratios and proportions unit.
Common Core Standards addressed:
6.RP.1 : Understand the concept and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.
6.RP.3 : Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
Mathematical Practices addressed:
MP.1 : Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP.4 : Model with mathematics.
