Description

This resource contains a 47-slide PowerPoint presentation on the famous ploughman poet from Scotland, Robert Burns, and Burns Night. The PowerPoint contains several hyperlinks to:

  • a highly engaging animated version of his life
  • recitations of some of his most well-known poems - "My Love is like a Red, Red, Rose", "To A Mouse", "To the Haggis", "Auld Lang Syne" and "Tom O' Shanter"
  • how Burns Night is celebrated in Scotland and around the world on the 25th January
  • the 'Immortal Memory' speech
  • cutting of the haggis,
  • how to create 'Burns' style poetry and many other activities including quizzes

The PowerPoint makes reference to the influence of Robert Burns on people such as Steinbeck and JD Salinger. John Steinbeck changed the title of his 1937 novel ‘Of Mice and Men’ from a line in Burns' poem ‘To a Mouse’ - “The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft agley” – “oft go astray”. J.D. Salinger’s famous 1951 novel ‘Catcher in the Rye’ based its title from a poem by Robert Burns ‘Comin' Thro' the Rye’.
