Description

Want to help your students critically analyze and evaluate speeches and/or commercials? Ready to teach what makes a speech “sound good”, or why some arguments flop?

This dense flipbook of nine mini-lessons will elicit stronger analytical skills from your writers to get visible growth, AND they get a keepsake reference tool that they can keep forever!

You can use this booklet…

• In a non-fiction reading unit, such as evaluating the quality of an argument

• In a writing unit, before or during the drafting phase of a speech

• In a public speaking, debate, or media unit, whether the students are giving or watching/listening to speeches

• In an AP Language class, OR in lower-level classes analyzing media & speeches

You also have many options for teaching this booklet! Use it…

• As a gift for students to use independently

• As a structured set of 9 mini-lessons that you can teach in 9 days or fewer

• As a differentiation tool, only doing direct instruction on the flaps that are needed

Over 50 terms are taught across nine tabs: the basics, parallelism & repetition, antithesis & chiasmus, hypophora & cadence, allusion & imagery, extended metaphors, propaganda, fallacies, and review. (See the preview for a full list of terms!)

Each tab includes:

Basic Facts: Definitions and purpose (the “why”), great for students who are new to the topic OR need review

Examples: Direct quotes or paraphrased examples from current and historical speeches, as well as modern-day commercials

Next: A grey box will scaffold students to an action step, usually writing something in the blank flap above that can be copied into a draft later. (This is a great formative assessment checkpoint, like an informal exit ticket built into each flap!)

Assembly is quick and easy – you only need scissors, a stapler, and three minutes! The booklet given to you in BOTH a print-and-go PDF, as well as an EDITABLE version that you can modify if needed!

Vocab terms addressed in this flipbook: (in order of appearance):

• Rhetoric: ethos, pathos, logos, parallel structure, anaphora, epistrophe, antithesis, chiasmus, hypophora, cadence, simple/compound/complex sentences, allusion, imagery, extended metaphor

• Propaganda & Fallacies: Beautiful people, common man, flag-waving, loaded words, nostalgia, testimonials, bandwagon, card-stacking, glittering generalities, overpromising, oversimplification, quotes out of context, ad hominem attacks, fear tactics, begging the question, confirmation bias, correlation vs. causation, extrapolation, false dichotomy, faulty comparison, guilt by association, hasty generalization, red herring, slippery slope, tu quoque
