Description
Practice rhetorical analysis with the foundational texts of the American Revolution through an engaging and challenging ESCAPE ROOM! During this escape room, students will critically read and analysis the rhetoric of texts like "Speech at the Virginia Convention," The Declaration of Independence, "Common Sense," and "American Crisis."
This sequential escape room takes students through 4 challenges, which start simple and gradually progress to more cognitively complex tasks.
There are three different options:
- Traditional (Pencil & Paper Escape Room: No technology needed)
- Blended (Traditional + Technology: Google form with clues automates the breakout, but the tasks are hidden around the room like in the traditional escape room)
- Fully Digital (The Google form is all students need. This is also a great option for absent students who are making up the escape room)
Complete materials and detailed instructions for ALL methods are included.
Please be aware that both the traditional and blended escape room require some prep (reading the instructions, printing the tasks, cutting matching cards, and hiding the tasks around the room). If you don’t have prep time, the fully digital option is your best option.
Summary of 4 Challenges:
1. Students will identify examples as ethos, pathos, or logos.
2. Students will identify literary devices such as simile, analogy, antithesis, hyperbole, and more.
3. Students will answer analysis questions about structure, author's purpose, and the effect of rhetorical devices.
4. Students will rhetorically analyze an excerpt of Thomas Paine's "The American Crisis."
This escape room is comprised of excerpts from Patrick Henry's "Speech at the Virginia Convention," The Declaration of Independence, Thomas Paine's "Common Sense," and "The American Crisis." You may choose to do this as a challenging introduction to these texts (before reading) or as a review/assessment of these texts (after reading). If you don’t have time to dive into these texts but want to briefly cover the rhetoric of the American Revolution, this is a great way to expose students to these foundational texts in a limited time frame. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS DESIGNED FOR USE IN AN AMERICAN LITERATURE CLASS. THIS IS NOT A HISTORY RESOURCE.
