Research Paper Pack - Paragraph by Paragraph

Effective scaffolding for students with writing accommodations and modifications or first-time writers! These handouts model sentence-by-sentence, paragraph-by-paragraph the basic structure of a five paragraph research paper.

There are seven separate handouts that take students through the process of writing a research paper. The seven handouts include: 3 Main Points, Thesis, Introduction, Body Paragraph 1, Body Paragraph 2, Body Paragraph 3, and Conclusion. Each handout breaks the process down into steps, sentence by sentence. Each sentence has a list of things to consider, an example, and a space for the student to write his/her own sentence. Finally, there is space for the paragraphs to be rewritten to make sure that they flow.

I handout one section/paragraph per day and have students work on it while I conference with them one on one to check their work from the day before. (If students are working on their first body paragraph, I call them back one by one to check their introduction from the day before). This works well for a 40 minute class period.

This step-by-step process breaks the research paper into manageable chunks. Students who have never written a research paper before will appreciate this structure. My students with special needs have success and do not feel overwhelmed working on the paper one sentence at a time.
