Description

This 10 slide Math Activ Studio flipchart teaches students to represent data with tally marks on a chart. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 4.1 - 1st grade. This lesson begins with the “Problem of the Day” in which students are given word problem in which they must solve using the visual manipulatives (plants) to subtract. The student can manipulate and use the “cross out” technique with the visual manipulatives on the flipchart. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary term(s) needed to understand the content of the lesson: tally mark. Next, the teacher demonstrates tally marks by using virtual counters on the Promethean Board then showing the corresponding tally marks. The students are then invited to do the same, one student can designate a certain amount of counters, then their partner can show the corresponding tally marks - then switch. The next page is a class activity in which a vote is taken on what color to paint the classroom walls. The teacher will take the votes of the students (or pick a student to take votes). Then the winner is determined by which color has the most tally marks. Next, images are displayed (paperclips, counters, and squares) and students must count the images and determine how many tally marks are needed for each group. Next, the students must read the tally marks shown to provide the corresponding number that goes with each set of tallies. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The next page gives a review and closure question to check for students’ understanding of the lesson taught. The last page gives a math journal entry in which students are given a set of numbers and they must show how to make tally marks for each number.
