How I use Religious Easter Poems for Primary and Junior: Over 20+ Poems and Activities in my classroom:

There are countless adorable Easter bunny and spring activities that focus on new life and the joy of the spring season. However, we often lose focus on the true meaning of Easter and the source of new life found in Jesus' death. I like using this series of religious Easter poems in my language lessons throughout the Easter season.

I find that students connect with poetry in such a beautiful way because of the simplicity in words and sentence structure. Students that typically tend to become overwhelmed with the amount of words on a page, are a bit more at ease once they see a poem, because of the spacing and how it visually looks on the page. There is also such a magical component of poetry once it is read out loud; students can hear the rhyming structure and visualize the meaning and importance of the poem, allowing them to connect with its essence on a deeper level. All of these children Easter poems accomplish this beautifully and will add a special touch to your Easter language or religion lessons.

Throughout the Easter season, I will start each religion or language lesson with one of the poems. I invite students to close their eyes as I read the Easter poem out loud. I find that when students close their eyes, they are able to really focus and visualize, as well as they are able to connect with the message of Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection more deeply. After I read the poem, I give a copy of the poem in the text format to pairs. Students then practice reading the poem together and discuss what they think the poem is about. After each pair of students have had an appropriate time to discuss, we come back together as a class, and have a follow-up discussion and lesson/activity based off of the Easter poem. Students will then find the traceable version of that poem in their Poetry booklets, where they are expected to trace and read the poem at home with loved ones.

*** PS: The reason why this Easter Poetry Booklet has poems for both Primary and Junior students is because I built this resource while teaching a Grade 3/4. However, I have used both "Primary" and "Junior" Easter poems for both divisions.

In previous years, with my Junior classes (Grades 4 - 6) I have used the "Primary" poems as a journal prompt or as a tool to facilitate meaningful class discussions about events in the Easter liturgical season. With my Primary classes, I have used some of the "Junior" poems as whole class activity. I would "break up" one of the Junior/higher level poems, by assigning a group a particular line. They would then draw a picture that corresponds with that line, and we would put it all together as an Easter class book. The ideas are endless and you can use these poems and follow-up activities in a variety of ways to meet the needs of your particular students or tailor it to make your Easter lessons even that more meaningful.
