Description
This set of 36 task cards focuses on relative pronouns and relative adverbs. Your upper elementary students will have an opportunity to practice interacting with the five relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, that, which) and three relative adverbs (when, why, where). Some of the task cards have a fill-in-the-blank format and others have a multiple-choice format.
The task cards follow five different formats:
- The first 12 task cards direct students to "Fill in the blank with the most appropriate relative pronoun." A sentence with a missing word follows, and students must decide which relative pronoun best completes the sentence.
- The next 8 task cards focus on relative pronouns, syntax, and punctuation. It simply says, "Which sentence is written correctly?" Three multiple-choice options follow. The sentences are almost the same, and students must select the sentence that is written correctly.
- The next 4 task cards, direct students to "Combine these sentences using a relative pronoun." Two simple sentences follow. Students must combine the sentences and write their newly-formed sentence on their answer sheet.
- The first 8 task cards direct students to "Fill in the blank with the most appropriate relative adverb." A sentence with a missing word follows, and students must decide which relative adverb best completes the sentence.
- The final 4 task cards, direct students to "Combine these sentences using a relative adverb." Two simple sentences follow. Students must combine the sentences and write their newly-formed sentence on their answer sheet.
A recording sheet and answer key is included.
Many teachers report posting the task cards around the room to give their students an opportunity to get up and walk around the room. Others say that they use these as a whole class formative activity where they place a task card under their doc cam, and then have students write their chosen answer on whiteboards. Both activities provide an engaging alternative to a traditional worksheet activity!

********This resource is available in three formats:
- Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute paper task cards and recording sheets.
- Easel Activity- Students can complete this activity on a device. Students read each question and select an answer. This has multiple formats: students either select the word that is missing from the sentence, select the sentence that is written correctly, or they type sentences in answer boxes. Most of the slides are self-checking! (The slides where students generate sentences are not self-checking.) When your students turn in their completed assignment, you will see their score and the number of attempts they made on each self-checking card.
- Easel Assessment- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. Twenty questions require students to read the sentence that contains a missing word. If the missing word is a relative pronoun, students must select the correct word from a list of five possible options. If the missing word is a relative adverb, students must select the correct word from a list of three possible options. For the remaining twelve items on this assessment, students must read three sentences and then select the sentence that used the relative pronoun or relative adverb correctly. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.
