What educators are saying

This resource was excellent - my school already had some resources for this activity, however, these labs are presented in a much more visually appealing and student-friendly way.

I've taught the class since 2010, and it's been an ongoing goal to take a class that can be super heavy lecture-based and make it more interactive as often as possible. Description

Updated 1/21/21!

After feedback about how the lab was more about reaction time rather than reflexes, I re-vamped the lab to actually include reflexes, not just reaction time activities. These are all low-material things you can do with objects that can generally be found around the house.

------

Part 1: Students test their reaction time using a ruler and a website (two different ways of testing the same idea). The website is fun- they have to tranquilize sheep. The only materials needed for Part 1 are a ruler and a partner.

Part 2: Students are asked to define reflex, and then asked if reflexes & reaction time are the same thing. Then, they play with eye reflexes- the photopupillary reflex and convergence- and consider how these are important for keeping us alive. All they need is a flashlight (pen light, flash light, cell phone light) for the first, and an object (as simple as a pencil or even their finger) to focus on for the second.

Part 3 has students research reflexes common in infants. The list of reflexes is provided, but students have to do some digging in order to answer the questions.

Part 4 has a few short wrap-up questions and a bonus website for fun.

This takes my efficient students one class period (45ish minutes) to finish parts 1 and 2, and most of part 3. I assign the leftovers as homework.

There is NO KEY included with this activity.
