The red shift and blue shift are used to determine our location with respect to other bodies within the universe. This assignment is typically conducted after the sound and light units. Students love all things space and this is no exception.
Students begin with the following question "Is the universe expanding? How is Doppler effect relevant for proof?" From here they begin research about the topic, linking what they have learned in class, and gathering evidence from research to form an answer.
CER stands for claim, evidence, and reasoning. A CER is a great way to get students writing scientifically. They cannot just give an answer, they must support it by evidence and show the connection with reasoning.
