Description

There are 5 days worth of lessons using horizontal bar graphs, vertical bar graphs, and picture graphs. Each lesson uses the same flier with information of real places in Phoenix, Arizona to visit on a weekend. Students are to collect the data and answer the questions based on their personal family information. Students need to both collect data to create graphs and read them to answer questions.

Each lesson also has a few word problems regarding time. Students need to identify what method of operation they need to use to solve the one and two step word problems. There are also problems that include the students filling in an analog clock with the correct time.

Vertical bar graphs (read/create): 2

Horizontal bar graphs (read/create): 3

Picture Graphs (read/create): 2

Tally charts (read/create): 2

Analog Clock Questions: 6

Day 1: Students collect data from a flier on places to visit with their families and create a vertical bar graph to help them answer 5 real-world word problems.

Day 2: Students use the information they collected from day one (or you can hand out the flier again) to answer 3 word problems and create a picture graph. Students will use the picture graph to answer 4 questions.

Day 3: Students will use the flier from day one to answer 3 questions. Students will use another price chart and a horizontal bar graph to answer 5 word problems.

Day 4: Students will answer 4 word problems pertaining to time. They will then use a picture graph to create a horizontal bar graph. They will use the horizontal bar graph to answer questions 5 – 8. There are two more word problems that pertain to time.

Day 5: Students will answer the 2 -step word problem about time. They will use the flier from day one to answer question 2. Students will use the tally chart given to create both a vertical bar graph and a horizontal bar graph. They will use the graphs to answer questions 5 - 9. Question 10 is a time word problem.

Answers that pertain to prices are given with the assumption of a family of 2 adults and 2 children unless the question gives more information. Students may have different answers if they have a different family set up. All other answers will be the same for all students.

Standards

Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
