Description

The Frog Scientist Reading and Study Guide is designed to help middle school science students read and understand the non-fiction book by Pamela Turner. The book is part of the “Scientists in the Field” series and gives kids a real-life look into the daily life of a scientists and his hard-working graduate students as they conduct field work and laboratory analysis. This book particularly focuses on the scientific method, explaining much of the terminology in a real-life experiment. This study guide can be used to hold students accountable, as individuals or a group of readers, to understand the science in the book, such as the use of a control group and manipulated variable, and it also addresses the effect of humans on the environment, as in pesticide use.It includes opportunities for students to answer open-ended questions (‘Why should we care about what's happening to frogs?") and content specific questions (“What is the difference between a manipulated variable and a responding variable?”) It includes a 11-page packet for students and an answer key for the teacher with extension ideas for project presentations.

"The Frog Scientist" shows a slice-of-life view of a successful African American scientist, while noting that he was born in a South Carolina “colored” hospital during a time (1967) when segregation was still a way of life in much of the South.Tyrone's wife and his graduate assistants exhibit persistence and dedication, and they all come from various non-white ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Great for differentiation in the science classroom, this book in the "Scientists in the Field Series" provides an interesting narrative while also showing the step by step process of an important scientific study.
