What is a Cold/Hot read?
A Cold/Hot read is basically a repeated reading.
- First, students read a new passage that they've never read before (cold read). Time them for 1 minute or 30 seconds (keep the time consistent each time).
- Then the teacher can go over tricky words, discuss what the passage was about, and let the student practice if they need to.
- Then, they get to try another timed fluency read (hot read). Their hot read will almost always be higher than their cold read, which is great for building self-esteem.
Their confidence will soar as they see the hot read tower over the cold read every time!
