This original, historical fiction reading passage was created to introduce immigration to students of all ages. The passage describes the adventure of a young girl, and her family as they leave Ireland and travel to America. The story describes details of the Irish Potato Famine, and gives insight into the immigration process.
Fifteen text-dependent comprehension questions are featured after reading. All questions are designed to meet Common Core Standards. An answer key is provided.
Key reading comprehension skills such as analyzing character traits, identifying genre, making inferences, vocabulary acquisition, comparing and contrasting, determining main idea, theme, sequence, and point of view are covered with this reading passage.
A teacher copy of the text provides additional background knowledge about the subject matter.
