    Description

If you are looking for something FUN, yet purposeful, to do on holidays - these scavenger hunts are PERFECT for you.

    Holiday's Included:

    • Christmas Around the World
    • Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
    • New Years Traditions - Around the World
    • Winter Sports
    • Valentine's Day

Ech of these scavenger hunts is an engaging activity that incorporates not only reading comprehension, but also problem solving and critical thinking skills. Students will want to complete the task so that they can unscramble a mystery word to continue the scavenger hunt.

Instead of hunting for locations around your classroom, students will be hunting for answers that are “code words” across the ten reading comprehension task cards. Students will revisit the non-fiction text cards multiple times, practicing reading comprehension skills as they move around the room looking for text evidence.

This lesson includes 10 short non-fiction reading passages, a mission, and a final mystery word. Each card reveals a new code word. The correct code word is found on a different card in the passage so that students must follow the task card trail to find the answers.

    How does it work?
Students will choose any reading card to start and read the passage. They will then read the question at the bottom of the card labeled “code word”. The code word for THAT number will lead them to a different card. But here’s the catch… students will not know where to find the answer, so they will have to visit, browse, and revisit clue cards and reading passages several times to find the answer they are looking for. The more times students read or skim the passage, the greater the chance of the information sinking in!

I suggest hanging the reading cards on the wall, scattering them on tables, or even hiding them. How you choose to set up your activity is up to you. I have my students work in pairs to complete the activity and the goal is to be the first one to come whisper the code word to me. This friendly competition always increases engagement!
