Description

In today’s world, information is hurled at us from every direction, and despite Gen Z students never having their hands get dirty from the ink of a newspaper, they are being bombarded with news from a wide range of media.  The ability to process what is being thrown at them and critically analyze news articles is a valuable skill students need now more than ever before in history.  In our “Blackline Masters: Newsworthy or Not?” resource, we provide four different options of article analysis to help students break down and analyze articles in any content area. These resources help students dig deeper into breaking news articles, feature length articles, Op Ed articles, and also help students determine if something is fake news.  Based on the current state of the world we are in now and today's most newsworthy topics, these forms are here for you at the perfect time!

The traditional printable includes 4 different PDFs depending on the type of article to analyze, breaking news, feature length, Op Ed, and fake news analysis. Each PDF can be printed separately for students. The digital version is created using Google Forms. These are the same four analysis types; however, because it is digital, it can be edited to add or remove questions based on your specific students.

⭐NOTE: We have made this same resource available in Microsoft Forms as well. To access that resource, click here.

Each form has a different set of questions depending on the type of article being analyzed.  A breaking news article is a quick high-level overview of the topic with just enough information to be able to be the first to publish the story.  A feature length article is an in-depth look at a topic, product or industry--it's a complex story designed to be read at a leisurely pace.  There are several different types of feature stories including a news feature, a profile, a trend, or a live-in.  An Op Ed article is an opinion article written to share one’s own ideas and viewpoints.  These three article types are very different and require different lenses to truly analyze.

The final form has students analyze an article in depth to try and determine whether or not it is fake news.  The questions in this form help students look for clues placed in an article to see if it is legitimate or not.  All of these forms have questions to answer before reading, during reading, and after reading.  Make a copy of the form, and feel free to include only the questions that gather the information you want your students to look for.

New to Google Forms or unsure what to do once you are ready to share with students?

This YouTube Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtoOHhA3aPQ from Simpletivity has a great overview on Google Forms.  If you are interested in just how to implement our Forms with no modifications, you can skip to the 11:40 second mark to learn how to share out the form to students or whomever you want filling it out.  In addition, the video also goes over how to view the responses to your form.  If you have any questions about how to share the form with students or how to view responses, please do not hesitate to email us ClassroomConstructionCrew@gmail.com for some help!

NOTE: These forms are set so they can be edited after the student submits them.  This would allow a student to submit one section the first day and then another section the next day.  Turning off this setting means the student has to answer all of the questions in the form before they can submit the form.  This setting is found under the gear icon in the top right corner of the form if you wish to turn it off.

If you have your students analyze media (text, photographs, video content, the Internet) frequently, you may want to consider picking up The Instructional Black Book Expansion Pack: Analyzing Media which includes 10 unique research-based graphic organizers focused on analyzing media.  We have created these with 6 tabs or 10 tabs down the side.
