Reader's Theater BUNDLE: 5 Scripts

Reader's Theatre is a fun and engaging way for students to practice reading aloud with fluency and expression, as well as performing in front of an audience without the stress and pressure of memorizing lines. I use reader's theatre at the end of the school year to keep my students focused and learning, despite the end of the year craziness!

This bundle consists of five scripts, totaling 27 parts. Mix and match the scripts to best meet the needs of your class!

The Caterpillar and the Cave (7 parts): This is a traditional literature tale. A rabbit leaves his cave to find some food, and while he’s gone, a caterpillar moves in. When the rabbit comes back, he finds that someone has moved into his cave. He calls out to the stranger, and the caterpillar yells back, “It is me! The one who crushes rhinos into the ground and tramples elephants into dust! Now go away!” The rabbit asks Tiger, Rhino, and Elephant for help, but none of them can make the caterpillar leave the cave. In the end, a frog comes by, and scares the caterpillar out.

The Baseball Hero (6 parts): A story about the Pirates baseball team that is in the league championship game. Two of the players, Max and Molly, aren’t very nice to another player, Lucas (not a character in the story), who isn’t as good as the rest of the players. Ruby tries to stand up for Lucas, but Max and Molly don’t stop. In the end, the Pirates are losing, and Lucas is the last player up to bat. He ends up hitting a home run and winning the game for the team!

The Mystery of the Missing Kangaroo (5 parts): Based on a true story! Tim and Lily are on a school field trip at the zoo. When the zookeeper brings them to the kangaroo exhibit, they find the kangaroos have escaped! The detectives haven’t found any clues, but as Tim and Lily are looking around, they discover a hole in the fence. The detectives set up night vision cameras, and discover that a wild fox family dug the hole. The kangaroos are later found in the woods are returned to their exhibit.

The Missing Pirate Treasure (3 parts): The Missing Pirate Treasure is about two kids, named Riley and Bailey, who are on vacation, when they find a glass bottle with a treasure map inside. Then they meet a pirate who is looking for his map and the lost treasure. They follow the clues and find the treasure, only to find out the treasure isn’t gold coins; it’s chocolate coins!

The Lost Dog (6 parts): The Lost Dog is about two kids named Alex and Taylor who take their dog for a walk, and the dog runs away. The kids get help from their neighbor and a police officer, but still can’t find their dog. In the end, the animal shelter calls them to tell them that the dog had been turned in to the shelter.

These scripts were written with end-of-the-year second graders' reading levels in mind. They are is shorter than most scripts written by big publishing companies, in order to keep the audience engaged for the whole performance (approximately 4-5 minutes to perform each play).

Each pack includes one script for each part with the lines highlighted, and one blank copy. Each script is a total of four pages, including the cover. To assemble the scripts, I take a 12" x 18" piece of construction paper and fold it in half. Then I glue the cover page on the front and the lines on the inside and back cover, and then laminate the booklets. I have also included name tags for each part. I turn them into signs my students hang around their necks, or you can make them into headbands/hats.
