Description

This 27-slide PowerPoint presentation is designed as an introduction to the concept of a ratio. It uses a fictional grocery store employee who uses data gathered to determine the right balance of carts and baskets to maintain in his store. Ratio language is analyzed as well as the formats of writing a ratio and simplifying when applicable. The lesson is based on the 6th grade Common Core standard: CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.1. It is intended for full class use, but can be used for individuals who were absent from a lesson or just need remediation. This is a great item to place on your teacher webpage if you have one. How long it takes for you to go through this PowerPoint depends on how much stoppage time for emphasis and student participation is employed. Many parts of the presentation are designed for student interaction. A practice problem is given and worked out at the end of the lesson.

Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, “The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.” “For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes.”
