What educators are saying

Your escape rooms are one of my favorite resources for my class. We complete one after each unit and it is my students' favorite activity. I have purchased almost all of the 6th grade escapes and will be purchasing more. Thank you for such a fantastic, challenging, and fun resource.
Used this for a large group activity. It was awesome to see all the different skill levels being able to solve it and those who rush had to actually slow down to slove things!

Description

Rates, ratios, and proportional relationships are the key to escaping a haunted house in this 6th grade math activity. This is a great Halloween worksheet alternative, or can be used any time. In the print or digital ratio puzzles, students will search for clues by reading tape diagrams, interpreting double number lines, creating equivalent ratios, plotting points on a coordinate plane, solving rate and ratio word problems, and much more.

For the digital version of this breakout activity, students must be able to access a Google Form™ (no e-mail or Google Drive™ required ). Simply pass out two papers to each group of students and the Google Form will automate the rest of the escape room process. The print escape room version requires the teacher to tell or distribute the backstory, print five clues, and check students' answers before handing out each new clue. Both version are low-prep for teachers and highly engaging for students.

In order to complete the 5 puzzles in this sixth grade math escape room activity, students must be able to:

  • Form equivalent ratios
  • Find missing values in tables
  • Plot values on a coordinate plane
  • Use rates and ratios to solve word problems
  • Solve simple substitution ciphers
  • Solve unit rate problems (Sam earns $6 an hour. How much will he earn in x hours).
  • Interpret tape diagrams
  • Interpret double number lines

A full answer key with detailed solutions is provided. You'll also find success signs for students to snap a photo with at the end of the activity!

If you're looking for an engaging Halloween math activity, look no further! This escape room is fun to do any time of year though. Encourage cooperation among your students, or provide enrichment for individuals. Escape rooms are also a great way to review for test prep! This online breakout can be used at any point in the school year; even for summer math review! Homeschooling families and math tutors can also spice up their math lessons with this fun ratio worksheet alternative.

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout. If you are using this for distance learning, there is one tool that requires students to have a Google Drive™, but this isn't essential.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 45 minutes. You can allow 60 minutes to be safe. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the puzzles very quickly (20-30 minutes), others will take longer.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

Update! Distance learning tools have been added including a Google Slides™ version of the back story and of the coordinate plane students need to use to solve one of the puzzles. This will require students to have their own Google Drives™ to use this portion of the resource.

Standards

Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, “The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.” “For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes.”
Understand the concept of a unit rate 𝘢/𝘣 associated with a ratio 𝘢:𝘣 with 𝘣 ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, “This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar.” “We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger.”
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.
Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed. For example, if it took 7 hours to mow 4 lawns, then at that rate, how many lawns could be mowed in 35 hours? At what rate were lawns being mowed?
