Description
Rates, ratios, and proportional relationships are the key to escaping a haunted house in this 6th grade math activity. This is a great Halloween worksheet alternative, or can be used any time. In the print or digital ratio puzzles, students will search for clues by reading tape diagrams, interpreting double number lines, creating equivalent ratios, plotting points on a coordinate plane, solving rate and ratio word problems, and much more.
For the digital version of this breakout activity, students must be able to access a Google Form™ (no e-mail or Google Drive™ required ). Simply pass out two papers to each group of students and the Google Form will automate the rest of the escape room process. The print escape room version requires the teacher to tell or distribute the backstory, print five clues, and check students' answers before handing out each new clue. Both version are low-prep for teachers and highly engaging for students.
In order to complete the 5 puzzles in this sixth grade math escape room activity, students must be able to:
- Form equivalent ratios
- Find missing values in tables
- Plot values on a coordinate plane
- Use rates and ratios to solve word problems
- Solve simple substitution ciphers
- Solve unit rate problems (Sam earns $6 an hour. How much will he earn in x hours).
- Interpret tape diagrams
- Interpret double number lines
A full answer key with detailed solutions is provided. You'll also find success signs for students to snap a photo with at the end of the activity!

FAQ
- Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout. If you are using this for distance learning, there is one tool that requires students to have a Google Drive™, but this isn't essential.
- How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 45 minutes. You can allow 60 minutes to be safe. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the puzzles very quickly (20-30 minutes), others will take longer.
- Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
Update! Distance learning tools have been added including a Google Slides™ version of the back story and of the coordinate plane students need to use to solve one of the puzzles. This will require students to have their own Google Drives™ to use this portion of the resource.
