Description

A 10 week unit for students in years 5 and 6 based around the concept of Rap. The unit looks at technical aspects of music composition including rhythm notation and arrangements based on different musical elements. It also includes activities on the history of rap and hip hop culture, and links to Indigenous Australian poetry. It uses links on the Arts Live website which requires an account (this is free if you are in Australia).

Students work towards developing their own raps about a topic that is important to them and learn how to create a backing track using Garage band on an iPad (this could be adapted if you have limited resources though - e.g. students work in groups to create their own live backing tracks for each other).

This resource includes curriculum content descriptors (Victorian Curriculum), learning intentions, success criteria, detailed lesson plans following a warm up, launch, explore, revise structure, video links, unit rubric, and multiple resources/activity sheets.
