What educators are saying

Used this with my 2nd and 4th grade homeschoolers when we did our rainforest unit. Both enjoyed the passages.
I used these passages with some older students in my resource room. We were working on comprehension and I particularly like that each passage has a question at the top, which gives the student a reason for reading the passage. I will definitely use these again this year! Thank you!

Description

This HUGE nonfiction unit is truly the only resource you need to teach your primary students about the rainforest and rainforest animals!

This unit is organized into 6 topics: the rainforest, sloths, spider monkeys, giant anteaters, harpy eagles and toucans.

There are 3 informational text articles provided for each topic (18 articles total). These articles can be used as individual close reading texts or can be put together to make a complete book. High quality photographs engage students and enhance their learning. These articles provide detailed information in a simple, basic format.

After each article you will find a page of 3 simple, explicit, text dependent questions. There is also 1 page that includes 2 writing prompts that ask students to summarize and synthesize their learning by evaluating both the photographs and the text.

These reading and writing tasks are designed to give young students complex information in a SIMPLE, student friendly format. These tasks may be achieved through shared reading and writing, small group activities, or individual student work. (Detailed instructions are provided). This is an excellent way to expose developing readers and writers to rigorous tasks. The vocabulary and sentence structure included in these articles has been specifically designed for new readers.

The articles make excellent close reading texts and are closely aligned to the kindergarten and first grade standards. While students may be able to read these texts independently, they were designed to be read with support (through shared reading experiences).

The articles are each designed to focus on one essential question. The articles included are:

How do living things work together in a rainforest?
