What educators are saying

I used this activity during summer learning. I was able to let K-5 use the same activity and they all loved it and the final products they created!
I showed my students a video about the history of Mosaic Art. I then let the children create whatever they wanted.

Description

What's Inside?

This art lesson provides teachers a simple, hands on and engaging lesson to explore Roman Mosaic art! It includes information to read aloud to students for a better understanding of life in ancient Rome and how mosaics were made, along with several extension activities for early finishers.

This lesson is from the bundle: ART HISTORY for Elementary ~ which has 13+ engaging but simple art lessons, art projects, teacher read-aloud scripts and literacy integration. This bundle takes students on a journey through art history and western civilization from cave art to modern art - all in a kid-friendly way!

PREVIEW - These single lessons have only recently separated from the bundle, but you can see a more in-depth preview with over 1,000+ reviews by clicking the link below:

It includes an extensive teacher script to read aloud to students about the time period and art style, with questions embedded to guide your lesson. You do NOT need to have any background in art or art history - everything is done for you. Just turn to the first page and begin - you can learn along with your students!

What's Included:

  • Read aloud script to introduce the time period and style; the script is meant for a young audience and has questions embedded that will engage students and make the conversation topics relatable.
  • Examples of finished student artwork
  • One main art project along with several extension projects
  • Several activities for early finishers or to extend thinking, such as a Reflect and Review page, a word search, a comic style writing activity, and a coloring page based on famous art
  • Key words to find related art work online to share with students

NOTE: The examples of famous artwork shared with students are web based, meaning that you are provided with key words to find images in a web search. The actual art work cannot be included in the unit due to copyright reasons, but all are easily found with a quick search. You can print the art, but even better if you have a projector, students can study all the details of each art piece even more closely!

What's Included In Each Lesson?

Each lesson has:

  • a teacher script to read aloud with simple information about the time period
  • a relevant art project
  • one or more extension art projects
  • Reflect and Review page to review concepts
  • coloring page of famous art
  • word search with relevant vocabulary for early finishers

Materials Needed

These art projects purposely use only inexpensive and easily accessible art supplies. I have worked at low-budget schools and know how expensive supplies can be. Therefore I have designed the lessons to be completed with simple supplies such as paper, scissors, markers, paints, pastels and other common items. You can see a materials list in the preview if you are not sure.

Approximate Time Needed

The time needed will depend on the age group of students, and whether or not you choose to complete all the projects, extension projects and related writing activities within each unit - there are a lot of different things to choose from! Each unit will take approximately one hour for the class discussion/teacher read-aloud script and art lesson / clean up. Another hour may be needed to do additional art lessons and writing extensions.

Note: You do NOT have to complete all the projects - you can pick and choose. You can also use the extension writing projects, word searches and coloring pages in your writing center each week, or for early finishers!

Literacy Components

There are many literacy components to this program as well, so it will fit in well with your writing and social studies (an early sense of history, culture and geography).

A simple world map is included so students can mark the areas that each lesson focuses on.

What About Early Finishers?

I have included reflect/review writing pages to work on when finished the art projects, as well as various printables, word searches for each lesson AND coloring sheets for each art period or artist. These can also be used in literacy centers or as extension lessons.

Reference Materials

All lessons also have are easily supported visually with a simple web search.

For copyright reasons the art pieces are not included, but it's more beneficial to project digital versions so all students can view paintings properly. I have listed the artist and title of the artwork clearly at the beginning of each lesson. Simply type it into a google search and click "images" to easily share with the class by projecting on the white board. You do not need any particular websites to complete this unit.

Managing Student Work

All projects can be kept in a scrapbook, which results in a great portfolio and keepsake! A scrapbook cover is included. I am sure you will also want to display the fantastic artwork on the wall as well, but later it can be glued into the scrapbook along with any extension projects for that time period.

Teacher Tip: I've been doing these lesson with multi-age buddy classes for 12+ years, with great success. If you have a chance to pair up students from different grade levels for these projects, I'd highly recommend it! Last year we paired grade 2's with grade 5's as "big buddies".
