Description

Need a complete unit on The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge with lessons and activities that create instant student understanding? This study guide, workbook and assessment has everything you need. Your British Literature students will love the fun, vibrant pages of the study guide. Vocabulary explanations, plot summaries, and an accompanying workbook with questions help comprehension and keep students busily engaged. No lesson prep is needed because everything has been has been done for you. A Study Guide, a workbook and an editable test- phew! The full poem and notes are included in this fun 73 page resource. No bulky, back-straining textbook is required. You just need to print out and photocopy the workbook or load the Easel Activity and you're set! Suggested answers are provided.
A sub without any prep time could supervise these lessons, as all explanations and answers are supplied and the students fill their question responses and drafts directly into their workbook/journal. The strongly visual nature of the resource is an integral component, helping to enrich students’ understanding of the text. A 40 point test PDF at the end of the unit checks for knowledge and comprehension. The test and the test answers PDFs are editable. Due to the terms of use of the artist who created the imagery, the Study Guide is not editable.

The Study Guide includes:
--- Coleridge’s full text, vibrantly illustrated.
--- Margin notes.
--- A brief summary of the main idea of each of the two sections before reading.
--- A summary of the section after reading.
--- A glossary of the poem’s tricky words.
--- An impressive vocabulary word to learn.

Additional features:
--- A timeline
--- A summary of key events of the Romantic period.

--- A summary of characteristics of Romantic poetry.

--- A brief biography of Coleridge’s life.
--- Definitions of key literary terms pertaining to the poem.

The Workbook includes:
--- Several questions for each section, of a variety of types.
--- Most questions require answers of a sentence or two; no simple ‘yes or no’ responses are called for.
--- The mix of analytical and easier factual questions will appeal to a variety of ability levels.
--- The workbook can only be successfully completed AFTER students have both read the poem AND the summary.
--- A few creative activities are included: students have to draw and write short poems.

--- Suggested answers are provided.

The Test includes:

--- 20 multiple choice questions

--- 20 true or false questions

--- An answer key

The test can only be successfully performed after the whole poem has been read and pondered. The quiz PDF and the answers PDF have no password security; you can add, change and remove questions and answers to suit your class's needs.

BONUS: a short fill-in-the-blanks quiz is included (with answers, of course), to help students to prepare for the test. These two PDFs are editable.

PHOTOCOPYING

If you print the poem and Study Guide in glorious color, you can keep them for a generation of learners, while photocopying only the workbook, quiz and test for each student, in utilitarian black and white.

Rated 5 out of 5 *****
Being smack in the middle of British Romanticism when school closed had me scrambling for materials that translated well at home. This resource was perfect. The activities were brief but required close reading and critical thinking, so they were perfect for the situation.
