What educators are saying

I needed something for the end of a unit to fill a day right before Thanksgiving Break. This was more than a “filler, but rather an engaging and fun way to show personalities and laugh together. Kids who hold back as singers enjoyed this activity.
My students absolutely loved this story! They were totally engaged in trying to figure out who took it! Highly recommend.

Description

This humorous Thanksgiving Readers’ Theater brain teaser mystery script will give grades 5-8 students practice in reading, comprehension, critical thinking and writing, while having lots of drama and ELA fun. The Mystery of the Vanishing Turkey whodunnit script will entertain your students and require them to perform inference tasks to solve clues. Perfect for reading or for performances! This 9 page script is intended for 9 readers but the number of readers can easily be contracted or expanded depending on how many groups you wish to have.

PLOT

This funny and engaging story is about the theft of a family’s mound of turkey leftovers. Which desperate family member, driven mad by turkey tacos, turkey meatballs, and turkey bolognaise, stole the leftovers container from the fridge? The clues seem to point to 11 year old Daisy and 13 year old Darius, but is it really them? Mom won’t rest until she knows!

STUDENT TASKS
To track down the turkey thief, students will have to disentangle three major clues. To end the activity, students discuss and then write on six questions, complete a journal entry and design a ‘Where’s Waldo?’ style drawing for a fellow student to locate the turkey leftovers container. There is also a mix and match Thanksgiving jokes activity, and a word search. This resource will delight both entire classes and small groups of early finishers.

Question sheets and answers are included.

My students absolutely loved reading this mystery. They really got into the reading. They really had to think about the story to see the clues. They needed a bit of guiding but once they were directed to reread and carefully think about certain parts, they were able to piece the evidence together. This is a very well written script and story. The reading parts are also broken up well. Thank you for a great product!

My students really loved this reader's theatre. It was so much fun to see them engaged with reading out loud! Many of my younger students needed guidance to understand the clues in the mystery but they still enjoyed themselves.

This was SO much fun that we actually used it as a reward day activity for students that had no missing work for the quarter! It kept students engaged, and the questions and activities were fun for my students of all levels!
