What educators are saying

My students loved this activity as a follow-up to the stock market simulation we did. They enjoyed seeing real companies and real stock prices as well as being able to buy and sell and manipulate their portfolio as time went on. Really well organized and easy to use.

Description

This assignment is designed to take only one day, and is for a short introduction to the stock market for grades 5-12.

This is a VERY fun an interactive lesson! My 7th students absolutely loved it and wanted to keep trying it again and again. It was fun to watch them light up as they started to get a small idea of what investing in the stock market really means!

At the push of a button, 5 random stocks are chosen from a hidden list of 140. The students decide how much to invest in each stock, then go to the following year and see if their stocks went up or down. Then they may buy and sell. The information includes actual stock prices from the last five years, so there is a great element of reality to the assignment. Finally, students will look up their stocks and their current prices online to see what their portfolio is worth today. A final score is given on how much they increased their assets in the five-year period.

In 2021 I updated this file so that there is now a Google Sheets version. Students need to have individual access to either Excel or Google Sheets--Excel is better, but the Google one works. Instructions are included that explain how to make the button macros enabled in both Excel and Google. It is unlikely to work in the free version of 365, but I have not had the means to test that.

The file also includes a finished example, and a step by step video for the teacher to explain exactly how it works. SUCH a fun lesson! I update this every year around January/February, and it has been updated as of 2024. The google version will update automatically, but you will need to re-download to get the updated Excel version.
