This detailed 2-week unit will help guide your teaching of the Pythagorean theorem from start to finish. Through engaging hands-on activities, students will understand what Pythagoras' theorem is, and be able to apply the Pythagorean theorem to problems in context, including 3D problems. With plenty of opportunities for scaffolding, differentiation, critical thinking, and self-reflection, this unit pack equips you with a highly rigorous unit, helping you provide your students with opportunities for engagement, collaboration, practice and deep learning.
This workbook consists of 40 creatively designed and mathematically rigorous pages leading students through the topic of the Pythagorean Theorem. With investigations, explanations, model examples and a variety of tasks and problems this workbook is ideal for students to work through independently- great for absent students or those needing additional support!
Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem (WORKSHEET)
Once students know Pythagoras' Theorem this is a great task for them to use it to determine whether or not a triangle is right-angled and so explore the converse of the theorem. The worksheet consists of 10 questions plus 2 extension challenge questions which require students to solve equations from a right-angled triangle with algebraic lengths.
Dotty Triangles- Pythagorean theorem task
A fun, rich task with a starting point accessible to all students but which soon develops into using the Pythagorean theorem to find the perimeter and area of triangles and manipulating radicals. There are lots of opportunities for rich discussions in this task, with students sharing their different approaches and ways to extend the problem further.
Pythagorean Theorem (WORKSHEETS)
Three differentiated variations of a worksheet to practice using the Pythagorean Theorem to find missing lengths in right-angled triangles. Sheet A has 10 main questions, which includes 2 worded problems and a 3D problem. It also has 1 additional extension challenge question which requires students to solve repeated Pythagorean problems. Sheets B and C consist of the 10 main questions, but with hints and structure to help students tackle the same questions.
Pythagorean Theorem Task (CROSSNUMBER)
These tasks are a great way of getting students to practice skills. Arranged like a crossword, these crossnumbers allow students to complete lots of questions in a fun and engaging way. There are three worksheets with 30 questions each. The first requires students to find the missing hypotenuse or leg of right-angled triangles using the Pythagorean Theorem. The second task has students finding the length of line segments. The third one involved Pythagoras in 3D with students finding the length of the diagonal in a cuboid. The crossnumber format for these worksheets provide an element of self-checking for students as they complete the tasks.
Sloping Squares - Pythagorean theorem task
A structured investigation for students to explore patterns with the area of sloping squares. Students use sloping lines to draw a square and then work out the area, without measuring the length of the sloping line. By relating this to the triangles below the sloping line students can discover the Pythagorean theorem. A guided proof sheet then allows students to work through a formal algebraic proof of the Pythagorean theorem.
Pythagorean Theorem PUZZLE PATH
This Pythagorean theorem puzzle path activity gets students out of their seats, while practicing their ability to solve a variety of Pythagorean theorem calculation problems. Moreover, with two levels of questions, it is great for a differentiated approach, as students are able to work at different levels of difficulty!
Pythagorean Theorem (Geometry: TEAM CHALLENGE task cards)
These are a great way to get students practicing core skills in a competitive and differentiated environment. Ideal for mixed ability classes, or to review skills at the end of a topic. Sometimes you just want students practicing problems and these Team Challenge task cards are a fun, competitive and differentiated way to do this. There are four levels of questions allowing students to practice their skills with using the Pythagorean Theorem; 21 questions at levels A-C and 12 questions at level D. Student response sheet and a version with all the solutions. These cards are so versatile they could be used in so many different ways: team challenges, worksheets, relays, teamwork to suggest just a few!
