Description
Puerto Rico Bundles makes connections to geography, grammar, literature, music, current events articles, and Social Studies. It's a well rounded unit with multiple connections to other disciplines.
OJO All items are in PDF format.
Suggested pacing:
1) Introduce students to Puerto Rico with slideshow in PDF format. I like students first to fill out a KWL chart. What do they already know about Puerto Rico? After viewing the slideshow, students will fill out what they learned about Puerto Rico. The last column "What to now more" lead to a Web Quest. (Slideshow is in bundle)
2) Students work on a web quest with a partner. Later students share out their findings. (Web quest is in bundle)
3) Student view a slideshow based on a biologist's findings in which he claims the perfect human in a Puerto Rican due to it's DNA. Explains the three races that makes a Puerto Rican (Taíno, European and African).
4) I do a quick review for Preterit vs Imperfect using Quizlet flashcards. (easily found online)
5) Students complete a grammar worksheet for Preterit vs Imperfect using Puerto Rico as the inspiration. (Worksheet is in bundle).
6) Students work on a map of Puerto Rico (included in bundle).
7) Quick review for ser vs estar (use quizlet cards easily found online).
8) Students work on Ser vs Estar worksheet that ties into Puerto Rico unit. (included in bundle).
9) Students read a short article about a movie being filmed in Puerto Rico. (activity packet is included in the bundle).
10) Students view a slideshow for Creole art in Puerto Rico. (included in bundle) Students are asked to mimic a painting of the Puerto Rican artists. Students may work individually or with a partner. Class time is given for this project and the projects are used to decorate out Puerto Rico wall in the classroom.
11) Students view A Julia Burgos slideshow (included in bundle). Class reads together the poem. Poem is easily found online:

12) Students read El coquí legend and compete activities in the packet. (Included in bundle)

21) For Hispanic Heritage month, students worked closed with the art teacher and recreated a Taíno village. They used empty cans of coffee cans covered with tree sticks and pieces of branches found on the school's grounds and dried up leaves were used for the roof with a A line cut out. The Taíno huts were a hit!
The Puerto Rico unit will take about a month since it reviews grammar, makes connections to poetry, art, music and literature. Also has reading, mapping activity and web quest which usually takes students a bit longer to complete.
11/23 ADDED Bonus file (Una semana de siete días) Slideshow, webquest, activities for short story "Una semana de siete días" written by Magali García Ramis. It makes connections to the politics of the island in the 60's.
