This package includes a 180 slide presentation in both Powerpoint and Google Slides format, AND 9 unique pages of carefully selected quotes from Poor Richard's Almanac in both Word and PDF format.
I have spent many hours researching Ben Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac, and have chosen 180 proverbs, idioms, and adages from its pages that would best translate to the school setting.
This Presentation contains 180 slides, one for each day of the year, in a unique 'antique' design. You certainly don't need to use all 180, but you could!
From the reviews below:
- "Great! This [presentation] was so much fun to do as a whole class and sparked a lot of discussion and helped with making inferences and using context clues as well. Of course figurative language is a 4th grade standard :)"
- "Great conversation starters. They are forcing my fourth graders to think at a deeper level."
- "Beautiful presentation or for printing and hanging."
- "This is going to be a perfect segue from our SS unit on the American colonies to our ELA unit on figurative language. Thank you for such a thorough and quality product."
The slides are arranged so that the ones that are more relevant to younger students' understanding are in the beginning. The presentation can be used at any grade level from higher fourth grade onward.
The presentation needs little introduction and is in a "use right now" format. Just download & it's ready to go!
ALSO INCLUDED are NINE UNIQUE PRINTABLE PAGES of quotes. (The quotes on the handouts are the same as those in the presentation, in the same order.)
Use in-class:
Call on students to read the quotes and then discuss them. It amazes me in how many of the quotes the students do not understand the 'deeper' meaning. It invokes great discussions. The Old-English grammar and syntax also adds interest to this lesson.
Use as homework:
Send home a sheet of quotes for students to interpret or re-write (a number of them) into modern language. All the quotes are numbered for this purpose.
Use as a fun pantomiming activity:
After we read one sheet of quotes, I like to cut them up into pieces and hand one to each student. Then, they need to "act it out" - without talking - and then call on students to guess which adage they were performing. They love this and will ask to do it again another day too. And with nine pages of handouts - you can!
The quotes on the handouts are in supplied in Word (and pdf) format, so if you want to change any or move them around, you can. But they are in a ready-to-use format - just download and print & you're ready to go!
