What educators are saying

This was great in December for small group with my 2nd grade special education students as guided group work.
These "prove it" passages helped my students use text evidence and work on their comprehension. They enjoyed using the highlighters to highlight the text.

Description

These nonfiction reading passages are perfect for the month of December and the Holiday season. Each passage is engaging and includes informational facts about Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year, reindeers, the poinsettia, Christmas in Mexico, and so much more! The goal of these close reading passages is to move students beyond a literal understanding and to a deeper and more critical evaluation of the text. These passages and comprehension questions require students to PROVE IT! They must go back to the text to support their answers with EVIDENCE.

In my own classroom I typically use these passages during my targeted small group instruction. During the first reading, I have my students number the paragraphs or subheadings (If the passage includes paragraphs or subheadings.) During the second reading my students take notes directly on the text. They make inferences, draw conclusions, circle vocabulary, etc. As my students complete the comprehension activities, I ALWAYS require them to underline, circle, or highlight the evidence in the text.

*Each passages includes a writing response. This is perfect to have students summarize the passage and draw a picture.

Included Topics:

  • Three Kings’ Day
  • Kwanzaa
  • Hanukkah
  • How to Play The Dreidel Game
  • Christmas Trees
  • Reindeer
  • The Poinsettia
  • Christmas in Mexico
  • Buche de Noel
  • Chinese New Year

I created these passages to use with my Holiday and Christmas Extravaganza units.
