What educators are saying

I used this resource to teach students how important it is to proofread their work before they turn it in, because of the minor mistakes they make. They enjoyed this especially since it made them feel like a teacher (they laughed at how "bad" the activity writing was). Definitely recommend this!!!
My student has many learning disabilities. We are homeschooling and we were able to adjust these lessons so that they were perfect for us.

Description

Proofreading / Editing Activities

Do you struggle with getting your students to proofread and edit their own papers? Are you looking for a common proofreading "language" in your classroom? This activity pack is perfect for you!

I created this proofreading/editing packet so that my students and I would have a common language during writing time. I wanted my students to be able to proofread/edit their classmates’ papers easily and with quick symbols. These are commonly used symbols throughout the country, so the earlier they learn them, the better, in my opinion.

How I use this activity pack in my classroom:

Step 1: I hang the posters. These posters can be printed in color at your local office supply store. It only cost me around $6 to have the posters printed in full color.

Step 2: We go over the “Proofreading/Editing Marks Sheet for Quick Reference.” I explain each symbol. Then, I ask students to glue this into their interactive notebooks. If you don’t use interactive notebooks, ask students to place this in a prominent place in their writing folders.

Step 3: We complete “Proofreading/Editing Practice #1” together. This is to ensure that students know the symbols and can use them properly.

Step 4: Students complete “Proofreading/Editing Practice #2-5” with partners or independently for morning work or homework. Then, we check their work together. I do not take a grade on these practice pages. Students are still learning how to use the symbols correctly.

Step 5: Students complete the “Proofreading/Editing Quiz.” You can decide whether you will allow students to have the symbols in front of them. I do allow my students to use the symbols sheet during the quiz because I am looking for correct usage. I know that these proofreading/editing symbols will become second nature to them the more they are used.

Step 6: I explain how to use the “Proofreading/Editing Partners” chart. We continue to use this sheet throughout the rest of the school year during proofreading and editing time!
